There are seasons for many things, skiing in Winter, bird nesting in Spring and early Summer, there is also a season for the many different tasks the team here at Evoke Tree Services have to tackle throughout the year, depending on seasonal conditions and tree growth cycles. Here’s a general guide to help you plan for the next 12 months:
Winter (November–February)
- Tree Felling & Removal—With trees dormant, it’s an ideal time for large removals as there’s minimal impact on surrounding vegetation.
- Crown Reduction & Thinning – Reduces wind resistance, lowering the risk of storm damage. Thinning is becoming an outdated practice and is not recommended.
- Deadwood Removal—Removing hazardous branches to prevent winter storm breakage.
- Stump Grinding—Easier to access due to reduced ground vegetation.
- Tree Planting—The best time for planting new trees is before the growing season begins.
Spring (March–May)
- Pruning—Best for certain species like willows and poplars before full leaf growth.
- Tree Health Inspections—Identifying early signs of disease or pest infestations.
- Hedge Trimming—Before bird nesting season begins (legally, major hedge work should be avoided from March to August).
- Mulching & Soil Care—Helping trees recover from winter stress.
Summer (June–August)
- Canopy Lifting—Raising the lower branches for more light and clearance.
- Formative Pruning—Shaping young trees for healthy growth.
- Storm Damage Inspections—Checking for summer storm impacts.
- Fruit Tree Pruning—Summer pruning for apples, pears, and stone fruit trees to improve yield. These should be in winter; things like cherry and plum can be summer pruned.
Autumn (September–October)
- General Pruning—Preparing trees for winter, avoiding major cuts that might stress the tree.
- Tree Planting Preparation—Planning locations for winter planting.
- Deadwood Removal—As leaves fall, it’s easier to spot weak branches.
- Fungal Inspections—Checking for issues like honey fungus before winter.
